A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term ended the previous year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a significant expansion of its role in public works. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic initiatives.
