At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the largest and deadliest raid in the area's past.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives reported. In excess of 80 people were taken into custody.

Fierce clashes erupted when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers moved in on Tuesday early hours. The criminal organization reacted using armed resistance, igniting obstacles and using drone-dropped explosives, police representatives confirmed.

The International human rights organization expressed being "horrified" by the law enforcement raid, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Raid Aftermath

The area of favelas close to the city's international airport is seen as the headquarters of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.

Local authorities stated a minimum of 50 of the deceased were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Numerous individuals were hurt, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Community members have described the mountainous region - housing around 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Access ways continue shut in the entire neighborhood.

Criminal Expansion

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their territory across the Rio state, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Security forces reported over 200kg (441lb) of narcotics were captured in the operation, together with dozens of firearms.

Raid Preparation

The combined action by different law enforcement agencies was preceded by a twelve-month inquiry.

Dozens of the suspects are thought to be participants in an organization from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in the city.

Extensive security missions are frequent in the country ahead of major international events in the South American nation.

The international environmental meeting COP30 is scheduled in the city of Belem in the north in late autumn.
