A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others got wounded in an apparently premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as officers and emergency crews entered the house near Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.

The three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled after the blast was apprehended shortly later. Each of them have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the scene displayed the property reduced to a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that previous tries had been made to evict the brother and sister trio in the past.

Background and Motive

The president of the region of Veneto, Luca Zaia, said the farmhouse was subject to an court order due to debts incurred by the three owners.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers arrived soon after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think a family member caused the blast.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the explosion immediately struck our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Casualties and Damage

Those injured by the incident included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three officers of Italy's state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

The prosecutor thought the blast had happened on a floor above the doorway and told reporters it was a “premeditated and voluntary homicide”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed personnel had “detected a whistling noise, presumably the gas cylinders being opened”.

Neighbor Statements

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed reporters, noting that the family members had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Defence Minister Minister Crosetto joined other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
