Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Auction Off World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Getting rid of undesired presents can be viewed as somewhat rude – except if it's done for a noble purpose.

A Philanthropic Clear-Out

Italy's prime minister, Giorgia Meloni, is set to sell around 270 presents received by her by international figures while abroad. The eclectic collection reportedly features gifts including a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.

The collection, combined, have an approximate value of €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Italian auction firm. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale during the holiday season, with all funds raised donated to non-profit organizations.

Storage Room Treasures

The presents are said to be locked away in a repository on the third floor of Palazzo Chigi. It has been reported that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust for years.

The full gift list has not yet been officially released, but a glimpse was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The query focused on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents valued above €300.

An International Array of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A woven wrap from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
  • A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from the Hungarian prime minister.
  • A pottery dish from the former US president.
  • A tablet from the Ukrainian president.
  • Artworks from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a board, and several rugs received during trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," observers have said.

Diplomatic Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with garnering support from foreign leaders and making Italy as a key protagonist on the world stage once again.

This charitable initiative symbolizes a distinct method to deal with the diplomatic artifacts that accumulate during a time in office.
