‘Every minor detail – execute them’: Guruzeta’s path from rehabilitation to scoring with Athletic Bilbao

Whenhe debut appearance the Athletic striker competed in English soil, an teenage playing for the reserve team against German opponents at Adams Park in fall 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he played in England, against Sunderland two months later, he scored. His third outing, against the Citizens soon after, well, he scored again. As he revisited to the northwest to face United at the sports complex in that year, he did it once more. A spectacular strike, as well. “Truly,” he states, “it’s a top-class goal I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what was necessary: they substituted him.

“I was furious,” the forward reveals, before breaking into laughter. “There must be a video somewhere. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: I was without a signed deal, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, as you’d expect. I’m unsure regarding Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about Man United, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at Bilbao. It’s a privilege.”

At the training ground, the Basque Country, the morning session is about to start; after it, the quick travel to Loiu and a further journey to England, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on midweek. Mentioning that phrase brings a smile to his face. It has become a challenging campaign for Athletic, partially owing to the pressures of being here. Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. As the child of the ex-La Real star the former professional and a dedicated fan at the team he now opposes, the forward is a graduate of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that developed the Arsenal manager, Xabi Alonso and Andoni Iraola. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after making his senior debut in that summer, he experienced a serious knee problem, the cut, a demotion and a return before he could truly get a chance, making his comeback to enjoy the highlights of their lives.

“Joining the setup thinking you won’t reach the top level but every phase you go through you’re still there and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you have to leave.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his debut and early 2019. “Subsequently I returned to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but I look back on it as a turning point because it forced me to alter the outlook. Recovering from a long-term injury is difficult, but it aids growth. You adopt practices previously lacking. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then go home, typical youth behavior. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Training, prehab. Strength training. With hip imbalance, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Highly robust. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Present-day images and the change is dramatic. The setback taught me. Sessions end, but further effort is needed. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”

Minutes are crucial. The striker moved emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the second half of 2021-22, the goals started to flow. “Many experience this: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, work, believe, and should the time come the requirement appears where you play, they might come back for you. You have to be ready. When the opportunity came, a fantasy realized. Lifting the cup, compete continentally, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Particularly after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with sixteen goals, he managed seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
