The Compassion of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Helped Me Land the Role That Transformed My Existence

In the final years of the 1980s, I was beginning a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my friend was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the student accommodation, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and started talking to other diners.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He wanted to know what I my profession was, and I explained that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was how he knew about it. He recommended that I consider applying for a job with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I toured the city, coming back to the dining hall that after dark. The engineering student came up to me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately informed my host that I lacked the necessary visa, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. One of the benefits was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but lacked the financial means without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have four wonderful sons and daughters. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
